When it comes to staying healthy for a lifetime, the Wellness Institute of the Americas is a strong believer in helping out patients make the positive changes needed for overall health. There are no quick fixes, but sometimes simple changes can bring about enormous benefits. We want to help you determine which changes you need to make, how to make them, and how to make those changes part of your everyday habits for health. That’s why we utilize metabolic testing — specifically, VO2 Max and RMR.
VO2 max is your maximal oxygen uptake. This measurement is considered the single best measure of an individual’s cardiovascular fitness and aerobic power — how healthy your heart is when it comes to exercise and how hard you can push yourself. VO2 can be affected by many factors, including age, genetics, and exercise or training.
We can test your VO2 easily in our office by using a specially designed exercise bike that increases resistance as you ride. As the resistance goes up, so will your heart rate, until you reach the anaerobic threshold (AT) — the point at which lactic acid begins to build up in your blood. That buildup can cause muscle pain and it is a signal to stop exercising. That can be a good thing because it means that your body needs time to recover before exercising again. But it can also shorten the length of workouts, which means your muscles are hitting threshold before enough work is done to improve fitness, health and help you do things like lose weight and look better. With proper training, your body will learn to use oxygen more efficiently and prevent you from reaching AT too soon. Through this test, we can determine your best heart rate to burn fat and increase cardiovascular function, and create a custom exercise plan that is best for you.
Along with VO2 Max, we also measure RMR — your Resting Metabolic Rate. RMR measures the number of calories your body consumes at rest. By combining that measurement along with the kinds of foods you eat — the fuels you use to power your body — we get a foundation for your daily nutritional requirements and how they work best with an exercise program to help you reach your goals, whether they be weight loss, improved overall health or better muscle training and ability to exercise. Testing RMR takes a mere 8-12 minutes, after which we will have a better idea how many calories you should eat for weight maintenance versus weight loss, and if your metabolism needs to change through different exercises, vitamin and mineral supplements, dietary changes and herbal supplements.
Both tests help determine the best individualized exercise and diet plan for lifetime maintenance. And that is the true goal of any diet or exercise plan — educating yourself to ensure good health always. These tests, along with other key factors that we will determine each time you visit our office, will get you started and ensure that you continue following the best health plan for you. The best for your health, for your happiness, for your lifetime. Together, we can achieve your goals and even go beyond them.
